#7 Scott Sanderson

Scott Sanderson's 1982 Topps card, thumbnail

Scott Sanderson has one of the most boring poses I’ve ever seen on a baseball card. I am fascinated by how some poses in this set of cards seem to reflect the type of season the player had. I first noticed it with Steve McCatty‘s card, and now I’m thinking about it again. Scott was [...]

#164 1981 Stolen Base Leaders

1981 Stolen Base Leaders's 1982 Topps card, thumbnail

Wow, now that’s a card. Two of the greatest base stealers of all-time, on the same baseball card. I absolutely loved this card when I was a kid, for that very reason. you can keep your home runs, steals and triples are far more exciting. Neither Tim Raines nor Rickey Henderson had any real trouble [...]

#38 Charlie Lea

Interesting stuff about this card. This photo is from May 16, 1981, his first start after throwing his no-hitter. In fact, there’s good reason to suspect this card wouldn’t exist if he never threw a no-hitter. Unfortunately Charlie’s career was cut short by shoulder injuries.

#341 All-Star Andre Dawson

This is Andre Dawson’s 1st All-Star card. At the break in ’81, Dawson’s OBP was .380 and he was slugging .598! Definitely deserved his spot on the team. His career stats show he didn’t get on base that often all the time, but he was very clutch.

#3 Tim Raines Sets The Rookie Steals Record

Tim Raines Sets The Rookie Steals Record's 1982 Topps card, thumbnail

This is the only ’81 highlight card that celebrates an entire season, not a specific event. Tim Raines had an awesome rookie season to set fire to a great career that was, in some ways, better than many Hall of Famers. Don’t believe me? Read on.

#730 Gary Carter

Ok, so you probably know a lot about Gary Carter already, but you probably don’t know that he might’ve won the NL MVP in ’82 if the Expos played more games on grass…

# Elias Sosa

Elias Sosa's 1982 Topps card, thumbnail

A nice candid shot of a guy looking relaxed and content with his role on the team. Elias Sosa was one of the best relievers in the late 1970′s and early 80′s, being called on to pitch for over 600 games in 12 seasons. He’d probably be a big time closer if he played 10 or 15 years later.
